The Radio School Programme
Makaranta Rediyo
Unschooled kids in Nigeria’s Northwest have a new, radio-based educational option thanks to
the Radio School Programme (Makaranta Rediyo). The program’s curriculum was designed accordingly to
recognise that English is not the kids’ first language. Using pre-existing radio stations in the several states
of the Northwest, the broadcasts are made daily in both English and Hausa during predetermined time
windows.
Drama and music are used in the episodes to create an engaging learning environment that is reminiscent of a classroom setting. The kids congregate in designated hubs staffed by mentors who provide booklets full of activities and general direction.
